On the Excitation of Tissue by Means of Condenser Discharges

چکیده

Equations are derived for the capacity-voltage relations for stimulation of tissue by condenser discharges, using the hypothesis that the local excitatory process p grows under the influence of an applied potential V according to the equation, See PDF for Equation where K and k are constants. It is further assumed that the local excitatory process becomes adequate when it attains a value h +/- alpha V where h and alpha are constants and V is the applied potential at the particular instant that the adequate value is attained. The equations so obtained are applied to the data of several authors on several types of tissue and the agreements obtained are sufficiently good. It is shown in one case that the direct current equation and the condenser discharge equation each derived from the above bases are consistent when applied to data from the same preparation.

Excitation Characteristics of the Squid Giant Axon: a Test of Excitation Theory in a Case of Rapid Accommodation

1. The characteristics of the threshold excitation behavior of the squid giant axon were investigated with condenser discharges, exponentially blunted D. c. shocks, sinusoidal currents, and brief condenser-discharge test shocks superimposed at either electrode at controlled brief intervals following the closing of a constant current. 2. Data obtained by the use of condenser discharges and expon...

Optimal parameters of electrical impulses for defibrillation by condenser discharges.

• Determination of the defibrillation threshold of the heart is important not only for developing the technique of defibrillation per se but also for improving the design of instruments used for that purpose. Previous workhas shown the necessity of selecting, for the discharge circuit, parameters that will keep voltage as low as possible, but many questions concerning the optimal parameters for...

Cardiac Arrhythmias following Condenser Discharges Led through an Inductance: Comparison with Effects of Pure Condenser Discharges.

• Transthoracic defibrillaton of the heart can be accomplished by several types of electric impulses, but more information is needed concerning the most suitable voltage and wave form for such impulses. In an earlier study reported in this journal, we described a method of applying graded condenser discharges during selected phases of the cardiac cycle through the intact chest walls of dogs und...

Blair's "condenser Theory" of Nerve Excitation

Blair's recent theory of excitation is analysed with the following conclusions: 1. The theory is inapplicable to currents of long duration; i.e., slowly increasing currents and the opening excitation. 2. The theory is a modification of the condenser theory of excitation but the modification is to be rejected on three grounds: (a) The modification has no obvious physical significance. (b) It doe...

Effect of Using Evaporative Condenser Instead of Air Condenser in Window-air Conditioners

In this paper,&#10 the application of evaporative cooling for refrigeration cycle to reduce power consumption in hot climates is emphasized. Experimental and analytical investigations were performed in order to specify the effect of evaporative cooling condenser instead of the commonly used air cooling condenser in window-air-conditioners. Evaporative condenser can reject more heat, thereby pre...
